How the World Cup and Olympic Games May Affect Our Unhoused Neighbors — Katie Hill

Why should ‘clean up’ mean push out, when it can mean lift up? With Los Angeles holding two major events, the World Cup and the Olympics, we have the opportunity to not only show our stadiums and skylines, but also our compassion and commitment to our community.

Major sports events attract an increased amount of attention, tourism, and resources. Programs like Inside Safe and Project Homekey have shown what is possible to help our unhoused neighbors: motels turned into temporary shelters to get people off the street and into a safe environment. What if we were able to expand these efforts and ensure families are not left behind with solutions that outlast the Games?

Safety, security, and dignity should always be our main priority. Community pride comes from inclusion. Prioritizing housing and supportive services can model to the world how a city, like Los Angeles, addresses these challenges with respect and humanity.

The Olympics should be a moment of pride and celebration. These extraordinary opportunities can become a catalyst for lasting progress with investments in housing programs and infrastructure that will serve our community long past the trophy and closing ceremonies.

Join organizations like Union Station Homeless Services and help ensure our neighbors receive the support needed to thrive. Together, we can champion our nation's athletes and the beautiful community that makes up Los Angeles!
