Finding Purpose Through Service
Volunteers help prepare dinner at the USHS Adult Center.
Several years ago, my wife and I started making sack lunches to help feed people that were living on Skid Row.
We quickly realized that our efforts, while well-intentioned, were overwhelmed by the immense need and chaos we encountered. It became clear that our approach wasn’t enough to make a lasting impact.
That’s when I discovered Union Station Homeless Services and began donating food pantry items to the Adult Center. Soon, I felt compelled to do more and started volunteering in the kitchen once a week. Working with the dedicated kitchen staff, I’ve been amazed by the quality and the variety of meals that we help to prepare. The commitment to serving nutritious, delicious food is truly inspiring. The most rewarding part has been hearing the residents’ appreciation. Knowing that I’m contributing to their journey toward self-reliance keeps me coming back week after week.

Volunteering at Union Station has given me a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment, proving that together, we can make a real difference in our community, one meal at a time. Matt Bragg USHS Kitchen & Pantry Volunteer, Adult Center
Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve, and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
